Frou Frou Days

For everyday that I have when all I want to wear is laid-back, minimal neutrals, there are others when I reach for the pinkest, sparkliest, most femme things I own. In other words, what I call my frou frou days.

I sort of have these days down to a mathematical equation: pink squared with my favorite lipstick and flare skirt, pattern times two with dainty polka dots and fun striped heels, then add lots of sparkle with an arm stack from Wrist Soiree.

With all my key elements in place, the frou frou-ing can commence, and oh my, is frou-frou-ing fun.

weekend cool

I feel like the weekends are the universe's way of saying, "here's two free days! Do what you want and be who you want!"  Now that I'm starting up my internship, I'll be getting more familiar with the structured side of style. I'm excited about it, for sure, but that free-spirited 23-year-old is still in me. She's alive, kicking and yelling, "I want to wear crop tops, dammit!" 

And I listened to her. But only because it was a festival weekend which made wearing a crop top more than appropriate. As for the rest of the get up, it's mostly thrifted. That's probably why I get a slight 90's (or 50's?) feeling from it. The free-spirited 23-year-old in me is okay with that, too.

polka dot pants

Stop the presses and hold the phones! These pants -- they are polka-dotted! Also, these pants are leggings. Fooled ya! The leggings-as-pants debate is a big one and my stance on the matter is clear. Viva the legging! That said, I do like to stick to some vital rules when I tread this territory.

I go a size or two up to avoid the embarrassment of leggings stretched so thin that they are see through. Also, I only go for materials that are sturdy enough to be considered pant quality. Then, I consider where they hit on the ankle. I prefer a cigarette pant length, like these. I love the Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face look they recreate.

When styling them, I stick to classic pieces to avoid looking like a teenager, since leggings can look very immature, very fast. And what am I if not mature? I exude maturity. Wait, polka dots are mature, right?

give a twirl

Pink has not always been an easy color for me to wear. I think at some point during the early-to-mid 2000's Paris Hilton had a monopoly on the color which sent me running in the opposite direction.

Now that I'm confident that I can wear pink without it being related back to a spoiled heiress or other similar stereotype, I wear it a lot more. 

I'm especially attached to the softer shades of pink -- blush to be specific. The paler the pink, the easier it is to blend with the rest of my closet. I can think of 50 ways to wear this dress right now (chambray shirt, sweater over, sweater under, tied patterned button up, crop top, leather jacket, etc.)! 

And besides the versatility of it, there is the fact that it is pink. And how can you feel anything but fabulous when wearing pink? Fabulous enough to twirl, perhaps?
